Beverley Hills Primary School (BHPS) provides a high quality Physical Education program for every child. It is designed to prepare students for a healthy and active lifestyle through the development of skills, knowledge, teamwork and positive attitudes. Our comprehensive program provides students with a wide range of physical and sporting experiences focusing on the sequential development of fundamental motor and locomotor skills, gymnastics, dance, athletics, fitness and various team sports.
Students receive Physical Education classes on a weekly basis for 50 minutes. To implement the P.E program, we have access to excellent facilities including a hall, an oval, two basketball / netball courts, a volleyball court, two artificial grass areas and many bat tennis courts. We also have a range of equipment that ensures a variety of exciting new experiences each session.
The students in the Junior School (Prep – Year 2) learn and practice the correct techniques for running, hopping, jumping, skipping, catching, throwing, kicking, rolling, balancing, twisting and changing direction. While those in the Senior School (Years 3 – 6) develop the capacity to link these skills into more complex and coordinated movement sequences. As students develop increasingly complex motor skills, they are given opportunities to apply these to modified games and sports.
The students participate in the following units:
Junior School – PMP, Fitness Games, Skipping, Gymnastics, Cricket, Netball, Dance, Athletics, Football, Basketball, Tennis and Tabloid Sports Fundamental Motor skills.
Senior School – Fitness Testing, Rounders, T-Ball, Softball, Cricket, Indoor and Outdoor Soccer, Gymnastics, Hockey, Football, European Handball, Soccer, Unusual Sports, Tennis, Basketball, Volleyball, Badminton, Table Tennis, Frisbee Game and Athletics.
The children are challenged in all their Physical Education activities to work cooperatively, follow simple instructions and rules and to use equipment and space safely. They have been encouraged to identify the feelings they experience during and after physical activity.
The Senior School children understand the need for simple rules, scoring systems, safety considerations and cooperation when playing competitive and non-competitive school games.
Prep children participate in the Perceptual Motor Program (PMP) each week. This program involves the students completing a variety of stations focusing on different skills. The main aims of the PMP program are to foster a sense of fun, cooperation and encouragement whilst learning different skills.
